Discretionary portfolio management means that instead of following the market and choosing what you want in your portfolio, Toron’s professionals make all the decisions on your behalf based on their research, knowledge and experience. For some people it’s difficult to give up control, even if they have had little success investing on their own. For others, it’s a relief to hand the responsibility for decision making to the experts.
It’s important to realize that you are still part of the process of discretionary portfolio management – even though you don’t pick the stocks or the time to buy or sell. We act within the framework you set out. Every investment relationship at Toron begins with a full assessment of needs, goals, risk tolerance, current and future financial assets, and return requirements and expectations. This information forms the basis of your investment policy statement (IPS) and is reviewed and updated regularly. The IPS is the guiding document for any decisions regarding your portfolio.
The starting point is to determine the asset mix that balances the risk with acceptable returns. Based on the IPS, we agree on an optimal equity/bond asset allocation. Funds are then carefully diversified and invested in equities identified and thoroughly researched by the Toron team or in fixed income securities. At Toron, diversification means moving beyond just Canadian markets. Our client portfolios are diversified globally, by industry and by market capitalization. This disciplined structure ensures that the best returns are achieved in accordance with the criteria set out in the IPS.
Once the portfolio is structured and invested, the Toron team continuously monitors it and makes adjustments as market conditions change or the portfolio requires rebalancing. Toron makes these decisions, but our clients can keep track of their portfolio and any activity using MYTORON – personal, secure portfolio access on the web.
We meet with our clients on a regular basis to review the results, the current portfolio and revise the IPS if required.
