Peter Sacks, CA
Managing Partner

Peter established Toron in 1988. A Chartered Accountant, he has spent 35 years in the financial services industry, including executive positions in Treasury Management at CIBC, Chase Manhattan Bank of Canada and Midland Bank of Canada. 

At Toron, he is responsible for planning the strategic direction of the company, along with marketing, business development and the management of client relationships. His global perspective on political and financial risk contributes an added performance edge for Toron clients.

Peter is a director of several North American investment funds and is also Chairman of the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business.

Away from Toron, Peter enjoys the physical exertion of tennis, the mental frustration of golf, and standing up on his surfboard long enough to pull his shorts back on.

Arthur Heinmaa, CFA
Managing Partner

Arthur co-founded Toron in 1988 and is the firm's chief market strategist. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Arthur has spent 25 years in the financial services industry, mostly in risk management, acquiring his skills at Merrill Lynch (Canada) Inc. and Dean Witter Reynolds (Canada) Inc. He lectures frequently on capital markets at professional seminars and is a contributor for the Stalla CFA review program. He has also served as a director of the Toronto CFA Society.

Arthur oversees the trading, research, operations and compliance activities of Toron as well as chairing the firm's Investment Committee. He is a director of the Excel Group of Funds, a Canadian mutual fund family specializing in international markets.

David Driscoll
Partner

David joined Toron in 1997 to help establish the wealth management division. He has spent 27 years in the financial services industry, encompassing Treasury Management at Central Guaranty Trust, credit analysis at Dominion Bond Rating Service (DBRS) and editor of The Investment Reporter, a weekly Canadian newsletter providing financial planning and portfolio management advice.

David advises clients across Canada and is also involved in marketing, business development, and research. He gives investment seminars to small groups and is a frequent guest on the Business News Network, educating viewers about prudent portfolio management.

David is an active supporter of the Foster Parents Plan and a number of environmental causes. He enjoys football, golf, tennis and downhill skiing, however, his greatest passion is baseball. He has written five books on the subject and they are enshrined in The Library at The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

John Welch
Partner

Part of Toron's client relationship team, John's wide-ranging interests and his consummate capacity to match people with ideas exemplify Toron's commitment to a premier level of client service.

Over the past 30 years, John has coupled his career in investment banking at CIBC in London, Sydney, Tokyo and Hong Kong and at Wood Gundy, with extensive experience in private banking, most recently as President and CEO of UBS Bank (Canada).

His depth of experience in private wealth management and understanding of retirement planning for entrepreneurs make him especially well suited to direct the Individual Pension Plan Initiative at Toron.

John is active in the community as:

Chevalier of the Order of Hospitaliers of St. John

John's other interests include classic cars (especially Jaguars), fine French wines and reading historical biographies. A major supporter of Dressage, his horses have represented Canada at the 2004 Pan Am Games and the 2006 World Equestrian Games.

Karl Berger, HBA
Partner

Karl is an integral member of Toron's client relationship team, structuring portfolios for high net worth individuals and families that balance their financial objectives with their tolerance for market risk. He also participates in Toron’s Treasury Risk Management practice, working with corporations to manage their foreign exchange and interest rate exposures.

Karl’s extensive financial market experience, acquired as Managing Director, Global Foreign Exchange Trading at CIBC World Markets, equips him with a unique ability to complement Toron's focused approach to risk management.

Karl is an avid sportsman and is otherwise kept busy by two active young daughters and their schooling. He is the Board Chair for the Halton Waldorf School.

Kim Aagaard, CA, MBA
Partner, Private Equity

As Toron's Private Equity team leader, Kim's past experience in enterprise management, as well as merchant banking and venture capital gives Toron the unique ability to combine financial acumen with hands-on operational experience to better select, monitor and develop successful enterprises.

A Chartered Accountant and MBA, Kim has had several leadership roles as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Director for multi-plant North American manufacturing businesses that have gone through critical transition phases. These responsibilities have included acquisitions, divestitures, financings, restructurings and strategic growth initiatives. Frequently, these roles involved extensive international activity, negotiating major contracts and establishing and guiding joint venture operations.

Kim has served on the boards of industry associations and a major children's not-for-profit organization. He has been active in municipal politics for several years and occasionally finds time to pursue interests in exploration literature, travel, gardening and other outdoor activities.

Nicola Bishop
Partner

Nicola heads the Women to Women initiatives at Toron along with directing the firm's critical Operations Department. Her responsibilities include Accounting, Portfolio Management and Trading Systems, Statement and Tax Reporting, the My Toron website and Human Resources. She has a proven ability to motivate team members, bypass bureaucracy and ensure client satisfaction.

Nicola has over 20 years of experience in a variety of managerial roles, including property management, human resources and as general manager of a manufacturing business. In the investment industry, Nicola previously worked at Toronto Society of Financial Analysts. 

Her interests include music, travel, golf and fundraising for a variety of charities. Nicola is active in the community as a Volunteer Coach for the KidsNow Programme in Toronto and as a Volunteer for the Field Band Foundation of South Africa.



Bing Monahan, MBA
Partner

Bing spearheads Toron's regional presence in Vancouver, B.C. He has accumulated a wealth of experience in investment management over 35 years, directing equity and fixed income portfolios for pension funds, endowment funds, estates and private clients in both the U.S. and Canada

Aside from representing several established financial institutions, his ever-present entrepreneurial flair has seen him initiate a highly successful investment counseling firm in Toronto as well as establish a Vancouver office for Guardian Capital Advisors.

Bing’s interests include tennis and biking, and he volunteers for the Meals on Wheels Program and the Food Bank.

Charles Lannon, CFA, MBA
Director of Global Equities

Charles hails from Victoria, B.C. and joined Toron in 2004 as an Investment Analyst. Previously, he worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) in their financial advisory practice and at C.I. Fund Management Inc. Charles received the CFA charter in 2001 and has his MBA degree from the University of Toronto.

At Toron, Charles is responsible for Toron's fundamental equity analysis, along with economic and capital markets research and conducting due diligence of companies being considered for inclusion in client portfolios.

Charles’ interests outside of Toron include reading, cycling, cross-country skiing and cheering for the Montreal Canadiens.

Robert Spafford, CFA, MBA
Investment Analyst

Robert joined Toron in 2006 as an Investment Analyst. He has more than 10 years of experience in the wealth management industry as an Equity Research Associate at RBC Capital Markets specializing in the North American telecommunications sector, at Fidelity Investments Canada as a Senior Fund Analyst and at BMO Private Client Group as an Investment Funds Specialist. Robert received the CFA charter in 2002 and has his MBA degree from the University of Toronto.

At Toron, Robert is responsible for Toron's fundamental equity analysis, along with economic and capital markets research and conducting due diligence of companies being considered for inclusion in client portfolios.

Robert's interests outside of Toron include tennis, snowboarding and cooking.

Ian Lovatt, MBA
Director of Marketing, Private Equity

With a successful career that includes teaching, software/systems marketing for leading companies, and over 10 years of professional investment management, Ian brings to Toron an excellent understanding of both the entrepreneurial realm and sophisticated financial markets. His professionalism and long-standing commitment to client relationship building are well suited to his work with the several different constituencies of private equity investing.
